Business Coaching: Advanced Skill Development


Purpose of this Course

Coaching has emerged as a mainstream approach to deliver critical learning in work organizations. For EA programs and EA professionals, it is important to understand coaching and its role in organizational learning. We must also master the art of coaching as a means of delivering the unique value of our expertise in human behavior in the workplace.

Attendance at this training will enable you to accelerate the learning process for building coaching skills and creating a coaching product in your external or internal EA program or in your private practice. For external programs, offering a credible coaching product will create a strong distinction between your services and the competition's. For internal programs, coaching will enhance program relevance and utilization to create stronger ties with HR and organizational development colleagues. For EA clinicians in private practice, coaching offers a way to expand your services to a wider base of potential clients.

The class content discusses the differentiation of business coaching, personal or life coaching, and counseling. A framework for competency-based coaching helps participants to position their coaching activities in alignment with an organization's learning objectives. A practical paradigm for using Emotional Intelligence competencies bring the EA practitioner's skills to bear on the coaching experience.

Andy LeFave's background as a coach, clinician, and EA professional who has worked in both internal and external EAPs makes him uniquely qualified to lead this class.

Course Objectives

At the end of this 2-day course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the history of business coaching and its role in organizational learning.
  • Describe the competency-based approach to learning.
  • Explain how emotional intelligence and other "soft skill" competencies are critical to organizational success.
  • Identify at least two ways that EA coaching can effectively deliver this competency-based content.
  • Know how to approach the "developmental" vs. the "remedial" coaching client.
  • Demonstrate coaching skills through practice in real coaching interactions.
  • Understand different approaches to coaching and state which ones are preferable in which context.
  • Align an EA coaching product with the coaching efforts of client organizations.
  • Understand how to deal successfully with a range of different coaching clients.
  • Build skills that are relevant to internal and external EAP and individual private practice.

Cancellation policy: Cancellations must be submitted 7 days prior to the day of training. If you cancel, you can choose to receive a one-year credit memo for a future training of equal value, or receive a refund less a $50 processing fee. Cancellations made after the 7-day cutoff will result in a charge of the full course fee. If you cancel after the 7-day cutoff, you may send another person in your place. No refunds will be made for partially-attended classes. If a class is cancelled by Blair Consulting Group, a full refund will be given.

About the Instructors

ANDY LEFAVE, LCSW, CEAP, Senior Consultant Andy began his EAP career as an internal EAP at Motorola. He then founded Alliance EAP, serving high tech and similar clients. In the 1980s, he pioneered progressive EAP models that increased utilization and client retention. He introduced EAP coaching services to further integrate Alliances EAP into client company business plans. Since selling his EAP, Andy has worked with EAPs to promote business coaching as an added value service. Andy’s current focus is on consulting and training with EA professionals and programs, especially coaching and team development. He is a clinician, business executive, and experienced coach.
